  THE SCIENCE OF REFLEXOLOGY

GOING TO A PHYSICAL THERAPIST ON A DAILY BASIS IS NOT VERY FEASIBLE BUT WITH SAKEM YOU CAN HAVE A DAILY APPOINTMENT WITH REFLEXOLOGY COMING TO YOU.

Discover the secret of a good foot massage and experience a rejuvenation of the complex functions of your body.

Today many speak of the science of reflexology. For those who don’t yet know about this therapeutic science, following is a brief summary of the methodology that is known for its extreme benefit in prevention and healing, offering serenity and psychosomatic equilibrium.

In the greater picture of natural medicine, frequently referred to also as “Alternative Medicine”, one of the most widely known and practiced is reflexology.

Reflexology, a word that literally means “science of the reflexes”, refers to the reflexes being various points that correspond and are connected to specific organs in the human body.

It has, in fact, been proven that the lines of reflexes part from the internal organs and arrive to the surface of the body. In many cases, the presence of suffering in those specific organs manifests itself by changes on the skin’s surface.

The entire human body possesses points of reflex that can be worked on to alleviate pain and tension; however, there are points in which the concentration of nerves are tighter, these points are primarily in the peripheral parts of the body (head, hands, feet) and they constitute the “terminal” of the marvellous computer that is the human body.

Within the human body exists a vital energy that flows continuously through many yet undiscovered canals and represents the key to good health. Any obstacle or interruption to this flow of energy constitutes the cause of changes to the physiological equilibrium and is dangerous to the vital functions of the organism.

It is clear that if these canals become obstructed or blocked, this energy will not flow smoothly throughout the body. In consequence, if the energy flow no longer arrives to the central switchboard, the entire system will be blocked and eventually stop running.

Along those same lines, if the organ stops receiving the quantity of energy that it requires, it is less likely to function correctly; therefore, it is of the utmost importance that nothing blocks the flow of this vital energy within the body.

One of the most ancient ways of stimulating and reactivating this flow of energy is through massage.

Methods of massage have evolved, along with humankind, to become more precise and target key points of the body; this progress has led to the discovery of different methodologies that work to improve the human body more effectively and efficiently.

The origins of many massage techniques are from ancient times, from civilizations often forgotten but that have left valid testimonials of their great wisdom and the necessity to teach humans the importance of recognizing themselves and their infinite powers of healing.

In the last ten years, there has been a strong tendency to bring to light many theories that seemed to have been forgotten and surpassed in time; antithesis to modern discoveries in science, technology and chemistry, the ancient forms of natural medicine have remerged.

Under the name of reflexology, there are other categories of natural healing that focus on the reflex points of the body: acupuncture, neuro-therapy, shiatsu, auricular therapy, etc…

Everyone knows that a healthy foot is critical for having good posture, confident composure and a straight spine balanced with an expression of serenity. Foot pains modify the way you walk and may cause even more painful contractions from ongoing suffering.

Everyone knows about the consequences of foot pains, but not everyone knows, or wants to believe, that foot pains have a cause and effect relationship that is very complex given that the feet constitute one of the most highly concentrated areas of reflex points on the human body.

Reflexology of the foot is the result of an historic evolution, tracking its origins back to ancient populations that used a form of massage focusing on pressure points; it is believed that Chinese practised this type of massage over 3000 years ago.

These ancient oriental doctrines, and more recently reflexology, have created a map of the foot, in which each zone of the foot corresponds to a different part of the body. Massaging upward on the heel of the foot favours good circulation and therefore also has a relaxing effect on all of the organs.

It is difficult to determine the key mechanisms that the scientist, Dr. William Fitzgerald, used to become the father of modern foot reflexology, demonstrating at the scientific level what for years had only been at an empirical one. It is certain that, observing the work of American Indian shamans who performed miraculous healing by stimulating the reflex points of the feet and hands, he began a series of experiments that brought him to some convincing and extraordinary discoveries.

By examining the feet, a diagnosis of illnesses and characteristics of lifestyle habits can be determined.

The foot, a part of the body that is often marginalized, can reveal many things about us, our character and our health.

A good foot massage can bring about positive effects to the overall health of the human organism and can even cure illnesses, acute or chronic. Foot massages not only help with cellulite, fatigue, bloating, varicose veins, etc… but can also have a positive effect on the sexual aspects of the patient.

Dr. Fitzgerald designed a map of the various zones of the feet that correspond to the internal organs and therefore was able to demonstrate that massaging these specific zones brought about an improvement in the blood flow of the corresponding organs.

Massage helps obtain stimulating or calming effects, based on the necessity. For example, intestinal, digestive or circulatory functions can be stimulated by focusing on massaging certain points while other types of massage may work to relieve a pain or have a calming effect. Dr. Fitzgerald discovered that putting pressure accurately and with a certain energy force on points of the foot can actually help diagnose the state of health of the internal organism insomuch as the foot is sensitive in the points that correspond to the weak or ill organs (the foot becomes a map of the body and its organism).

A dull pain can reveal a chronic illness while a sharp pain may refer to an illness that is acute. From Dr. Fitzgerald’s discovery, others have made progress and the therapy of reflexology has been further enriched by the experience of various researchers and healers.

There have been many publications that teach self-massage of the foot as a preventative measure or to heal various illnesses and pains.

In Milan, Italy, a clinic specialized in the study and application of reflexology of the foot, “INTERNATIONAL TSOU CENTER” (tsou in Chinese signifies inferior limbs) was created a few years ago and has been recognized for bringing many innovative discoveries to reflexology, which is now practiced by various schools of healing

The specialists of this center, other than just curing patients, hold periodic theory and practical training courses for those interested in learning the art of zone massage. They also teach the way that the foot speaks to us: with its form, color, smell, structure of the toes and the way they are positioned, the aspect of the toenails, the thickness of the skin, the existence of calluses and corns, bone spurs and even wrinkles.

With these medical studies, it has been discovered that the right foot corresponds to the rational part of the human being while the left foot corresponds to the irrational, emotional and instinctive part. Some interesting deductions have been made: if a person has a more pronounced big toe on the left foot then it could be a sign that the person has problems with affection; if the right is larger then the person could have problems with the rational side of his character.

People who have the second toe of the left foot larger than the big toe often experience suffering of the heart, are hyperactive, emotional, wear dark colors and prefer foods that are bitter or sour. This and many other things can be discovered by examining a simple toe or aspect of the foot.

From the clinical perspective, there are many examples of treatment and diagnosis using reflexology:

  • An ingrown toenail on the internal part of the foot can be a sign of problems or suffering of the spleen or stomach.
  • An ingrown toenail on the opposite side can be an indication of liver problems.
  • The thickening of a toenail can correspond to poor kidney function and can typically be characteristic of people who are fearful and have sleep disorders.
  • The presence of calluses under the second or third toe can be symptomatic of catarrh in the lungs or bronchial tubes or catarrh caused by sinusitis.
  • Warts or fungi (produced by acidic sweat) indicate a diet that is very heavy and rich.

With seven or eight good massages, a person can obtain valid results even in the case of chronic illness. In any case, these massages eliminate toxins and are critical for people who are taking prescriptions drugs or medicines to help purify the system.

The use of SAKEM footwear is an optimal substitute or addition to the zone massage treatments.
